Bucharest, December 2009. A video memorial commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Romanian Revolution (which most believe to have been an act of pure fiction), a street violinist cranking out a Mozart concerto in the sub zero temperature, a bum bumming a smoke, and a stray dog looking up at passersby, vaguely beginning for whatever might come his way. All this transpiring in a passage underneath the State Theater, which the ex-dictator’s wife, Elena (executed during the Revolution alongside her dictator husband), ordered to be built in the shape of a famous old-time Romanian actors’ hat, a shape which can only be made out when viewed from a helicopter or other low flying aircraft. Welcome to Bucharest, my place of birth.
